Stuck Without a Relieving Letter: How Can I Secure My New Job Offer in Time?

Hi, I joined ONGC one month ago and resigned on 23 September 2017 during my probation period, specifying 8 October 2017 as my relieving date because I need to join IOCL on 16 October. However, the HR department at ONGC is not providing me with a relieving letter and is delaying the process. I have pleaded with them, but they are not responding. Failing to join on 16 October without a relieving letter may lead to the cancellation of my job offer at IOCL. I am under great distress; what should I do? My whole life and career are at stake.

Relieving Letter Issue During Probation Period

Most companies do not issue a relieving letter to employees who leave a job before completing their probation period. Although it is an unwritten rule, most companies practice it religiously since they have a valid reason to deny it on grounds of short-term employment.

Instead, you can do the following:

1. Inform your new employer that a relieving letter might not be issued. However, you can seek an Acceptance of Resignation Letter from ONGC, duly approved by your HOD and HR. A copy can be presented to your new employer.

2. Request ONGC to issue you a copy of the Full and Final Settlement, which will include details like the date of joining, resignation, and date of leaving.

3. You can request IOCL to speak to your HOD/HR in ONGC and confirm the employment details.

But the above should only be done if you are not issued a relieving letter despite several requests to ONGC.
