Is It Fair for Companies to Lower Your Job Grade Without Telling You First?

Sunil Vir singh
Hi everyone,

I have been working with a Pvt Ltd company for two years now. When I first joined, I was at grade M10. However, the management recently decreased my grade to M11 without any prior information. I am curious to know if this is possible or if there are any rules that allow them to lower the grade at any point in time. When I inquired with HR, she mentioned that they have revised the grading policy.

Thank you.

In Delhi, India, as in many jurisdictions, companies have the right to revise their grading policies, which may include altering employees' grades. However, it is essential to ensure that such changes comply with the labor laws and regulations in force. Here are some steps you can take to address this situation:

1. Review Employment Contract: Examine your initial job offer, employment contract, and any company policies that outline the terms of grade revisions.

2. Seek Clarification: Request a formal meeting with HR or management to understand the reasons behind the grade decrease and how it aligns with the revised grading policy.

3. Legal Consultation: If necessary, consider seeking legal advice to determine if the grade reduction violates any labor laws or your employment rights.

4. Documentation: Keep detailed records of all communications, including emails, letters, or meeting notes related to the grade change.

5. Appeal Process: Inquire about the company's appeal process for challenging the grade decrease if you believe it was unjustified or unfair.

6. Performance Feedback: Request feedback on your performance that led to the grade reduction and seek guidance on areas of improvement to potentially regain your previous grade.

7. Professional Approach: Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the process to ensure constructive dialogue and resolution.

Remember, open communication and understanding the company's policies and procedures are crucial in addressing concerns related to grade changes.
