Starting Fresh in HR: What Legal Essentials Should I Know for Framing Policies?

padma_cool
Hi friends, I am Padma Harikrishnan from Chennai. After a long career break post-marriage and taking care of a 3-year-old toddler, I am planning to revamp my HR career from next month. I have joined a new company as an HRBP. I am very excited, at the same time nervous since I am going to start afresh after a long break. Hopefully, you guys would help me in my new journey.

Framing HR Policies in a New Company

Since it's a new company, I need to frame HR policies from scratch. Can anybody help me in figuring out what laws I should go through before working on HR policies? Since it's a private limited company, is it the Shops and Establishment Act?

Dear Padma, wishing you all the best for your new role. Now, coming to your query, which act to follow will depend on whether it is a factory or a sales office. In the absence of information about the nature of the company, we choose to remain silent.

Enhancing HR Policies

Secondly, it is not only that HR needs to provide what the acts say; we need to go beyond them to enhance the service. Make the policy smooth and easy to understand; do not use very difficult language for people to understand. Frame policies keeping in mind the culture of the organization and also ensure that the overall working is not affected. Keep the flow smooth.

Understanding Existing Workflows

Have a study of the existing workflow and also the day-to-day functioning so that you do not have to change a lot. Many things would be there, but not in writing. Introduce a good change before you curtail an already existing one.

Legal Compliance and Beyond

So, Shops & Establishments Act, Factories Act, Minimum Wages, etc., need to be followed, but try to go beyond. Do not only stick to the law; go beyond the law and create a difference.
