Are Companies Legally Required to Hire Interns Permanently? Let's Discuss the Rules and Timelines

Dear All,

I would like to understand whether the company has any obligation to absorb an intern, and if so, after how many months. Is there any applicable law in this regard? Should there be PF/ESI deductions for interns hired for a specific period of time? Currently, I am hiring interns in the Actuarial and Business Development departments as I work for an insurance company.

Generally, interns can be engaged for less than 3 months without any stipend; otherwise, ESI & PF need to be paid regardless of the number of days they work with you, even for a day also.
