Laid Off After 5 Months: Can You Withdraw Professional Tax and Are You Eligible?

chandrashekhar M
Dear all,

I want to know if a person has worked for 5 months in a firm and suddenly the firm starts a layoff and asks the employee to quit the job, is there any procedure for the withdrawal of professional tax, and will he be eligible for it? Many people have asked me about it.

No, professional tax is not refundable.

Dear Chandrashekhar,

Professional Tax is non-refundable; thus, there is no option for withdrawal.

The person has worked for 5 months. Profession tax needs to be paid for that period. No one pays profession tax in advance, and there is no minimum requirement for profession tax. Even if the person has worked, they have to pay profession tax. So, where is the question of withdrawal or refund?
