New to HR? Seeking Guidance on Salary Calculations and Essential HR Practices

Daisy Gulati
Hi, I've recently joined a company as an Associate HR (Fresher). Please tell me some basic guidelines to be followed as an HR. Also, what is the best way to calculate salaries and leaves.

As an HR professional, it is essential to familiarize yourself with company policies and procedures regarding recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, and compliance. Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism is crucial in handling sensitive employee information.

When it comes to calculating salaries, ensure you understand the company's payroll system and any applicable laws regarding minimum wage, overtime, and deductions. It is important to accurately document and track employees' attendance, leave balances, and entitlements to ensure fair and consistent payroll processing.

Additionally, developing effective communication skills and building positive relationships with employees can help you address their concerns and foster a productive work environment. Continuous learning and staying updated on HR trends and best practices will also aid in your professional growth in the field.

For calculating leaves, you need to have a proper leave policy that should meet the statutory and mutual benefits for both employees and employers. Salary calculation depends on the total salary outgo. If the salary exceeds the IT limit, then you need to plan wisely to reduce the tax and overheads for the organization.

Leave Policies in Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Units

If you are in a manufacturing unit, then the leaves are to be as per the Factories Act. If you are in an office or non-manufacturing area, then the same is to be as per the Shops & Establishments Act of that particular state. These norms are to be followed. Over and above the statutory norms, if the organization wants to provide additional benefits, it is left to the management's discretion. For example, some organizations under the Factories Act provide casual/sick leave, special leaves, and more earned leaves than the numbers stipulated under the Factories Act.

Salary Compliance and Considerations

Regarding salaries, you need to comply with the statutory norms under the Minimum Wages Act. In addition to this, consider the paying capacity of the management, the salary and wage structures of similar industries, and the cost of living in the area where your business is located.

Hope this is clear.

Thanks,
