Understanding Leave Calculations: How Do You Count Days Off Around Weekends and Holidays?

Prasannakumari
I like to know the normal procedure of leave for employees in our company. We offer 12 days of CL (Casual Leave) and 15 days of PL (Paid Leave) to our employees.
If an employee wants to take leave on Saturday and Monday, how do we calculate whether it is for 3 days or 2 days?
If Saturday is a national holiday and they also want to take leave on Sunday and Monday, how should we calculate the total leave duration?

Calculating leave taken depends on the company. Normally, if Saturday is a working day, and Saturday and the following Monday are taken as leave, then leave is calculated as being for 3 days, if leave is calculated on a calendar basis. However, if your leave is calculated on working days only, then leave will be for 2 days only, i.e. Saturday and Monday. If Saturday is a holiday, then obviously, only Monday will be taken as leave, whether the leave is calculated calendar-wise or on working days. Your company will need to revise its leave policy, taking into account all such situations, while ensuring that neither employees nor employer are unduly benefitted. Jeroo
