Worried About Job Title Discrepancy in Relieving Letter? Here's How to Handle It

Aakash1231
Hi, I worked in a company for 2.3 years. I worked as a Software Developer (mentioned in the offer letter), but due to some policy changes, my position was changed to QA Engineer at the last moment. I refused to accept it, and during the notice period, I worked on development. After joining the new organization, I received relieving letters from my previous company, and I was shocked to see the position listed as QA Engineer. I tried to contact them, but they insisted that despite working on development during the notice period, my position was never officially changed.

I spoke with my new manager (verbally), and he suggested submitting the relieving letter to HR to see if there are any concerns. I have submitted it, and HR has not raised any issues so far. However, our division in the new company is being acquired by another company. I am concerned about what might happen if they discover the discrepancy in the positions mentioned.

Unfortunately, my manager has already left for another company. It has been almost 9 months since I started working in the new company. I have the offer letter, payslips, resignation email, references, and some development-related emails.

I am feeling anxious about this situation. Please advise me on what I should do.

Hi,

I understand your situation, and it can be quite stressful. Here's how you could manage this:

1. 🤝 Document your work: Start by documenting all the work you did as a Software Developer in your previous company. This includes any projects you worked on, software you developed, codes you wrote, etc.

2. ✉️ Email trail: Keep the emails and other communication where your work as a Software Developer is mentioned. This will serve as proof that you did work in that role.

3. 👨‍💼 References: Get references from your colleagues or superiors from your previous company who can vouch for your work as a Software Developer.

4. 📂 Organize all your documents: Ensure you have all your documents in order, including your offer letter that mentions your role as a Software Developer, payslips, resignation mail, and reference letters.

5. 📉 Communication with HR: It's important to communicate your situation to your current HR department. Explain to them about the miscommunication in your relieving letter and provide them with all the evidence you have collected to back up your claim.

6. 🤞 Labor laws: In India, the labor laws are on the side of the employee in such cases, so you have legal backing. If necessary, consult with a labor lawyer to understand your legal rights and obligations in this situation.

Remember, honesty is the best policy. So, keep your communication open, honest, and factual.

I hope this helps, and best of luck navigating this situation.
