If you are already working in HR, talk to your superiors and your work colleagues to get a feel for what is required.

You need to try to volunteer some of your work time to sit with willing colleagues and learn what they do to build your skills. Show the bosses you are keen to learn and stretch yourself. There is no reason why they should not help you if you show initiative and can demonstrate the benefits to the organization.
