Marriage Leave Dilemma: Do Startups Offer a Month Off Without Pay Cuts?

I am working in a start-up based in Mumbai. I would like to know about Marriage Leaves. One of the employees is getting married in Nov 2017. We have allocated 30 leaves to the employees, divided into 11 public holidays and 19 days they can take at their discretion. She is requesting a one-month leave without a pay cut. In this scenario, what would be the best option to consider? I am curious if any start-ups or companies offer a one-month holiday for marriage without a pay cut?

Yes, in the case of marriage, as it is a very special occasion in everyone's life, the company will consider and provide leave, even for one month without loss of pay (LOP). However, it's purely a management decision. In such cases, treat this issue as a high priority for management and let them decide how many days they can grant her.

As you have mentioned, employees are entitled to 30 days of leave in a year, so she is eligible to avail it. But all her leaves will lapse. If she requires leave next time, it will result in a loss of pay. If she leaves the organization after a few months, it will be a loss for the company.

In addition to the above info, as an HR professional of a company, I would strongly recommend having a leave policy that is maintained to streamline everything, instead of giving employees the liberty to choose 19 days as they want.

As it is a startup, please ensure that you establish all rules in the beginning itself.
