Considering a Company Secretary Course: Is It Worth the Investment for HR Professionals?

Hi Friends,

Here, I come out with a new topic "Company Secretary". Actually, I'm planning to take this course. Based on this, I've gathered more information about the course details, eligibility, etc.

Why am I sticking to this course? Recently, my company has been incorporated and privatized. I'm the only person in the HR department for my company. For company registration, I've taken many steps individually without the auditor's guidance. Some processes like DIN, DSC, Form 1A, Affidavit, etc., were handled by me.

However, the final processes like Form 18, Form 32, I can't do without the auditor's guidance. The issue arises when filling out the online form; they ask for the License No. of any CA/Auditor/Company Secretary. Therefore, I sought assistance from a company secretary to complete the registration for the final stage. I paid Rs. 11000/- as a fee for the CS services.

Now, I'm considering why I should pursue this CS course.

Friends, please provide me with suggestions and guide me in the right direction.

It is nice that you are going to study Company Secretary. To my knowledge, it is ten times the BL course. There are many papers you have to pass, and it requires constant reading and updating of your knowledge on many acts. It is on par with the C.A. course. If you have free time of at least 4 to 6 hours every day, you can pursue this course.

Thanks for your immediate response. I'm unaware of any laws or companies act, but I'm collecting more articles and I'm interested in pursuing this line of work. Every year, examinations for CS are conducted in June and December. However, this December, I can't apply as the time is too short. I'll look out for the examination in June next year.

Hi Saravana,

This is a good decision. Just visit the nearest CS chapter in Chennai and enroll yourself.

Earlier, the majority of the curriculum was occupied by different Acts; however, the new syllabus is very good. Although the portion is vast, if you study smartly, you can crack the exam.

Hats off to you for your decision. The total number of examination centres is 55. To qualify as a CS, you have to clear five papers in the foundation exam, eight in intermediate, and nine in the final examination.

The syllabus of the CS course includes:

- Basic Economics and Business Environment
- Financial Accounting
- General and Commercial Law
- Management Accounting
- Company Law
- Management Information Systems and Corporate Secretarial Practice relating to economic laws and drafting
- Corporate Restructuring - law and practice
- Banking and Insurance - law and practice
- World Trade Organisation - International Trade
- Joint Ventures and Foreign Collaborations
- Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.

I have read your grievance. To incorporate a company, you need to seek the help of professionals like a CA or CS, as it is mandatory. Certification of the professional is essential for filing forms such as Form 18, Form 32, etc., as mandated by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. You cannot overrule this requirement.

When hiring these professionals, you must be prepared to pay professional charges, as no one works for charity.

You can certainly pursue the CS course, as one of our members suggested. The course consists of three stages: Foundation, Intermediate, and Final.

The Foundation stage comprises five papers, which you can pursue even after completing your +2. For the Intermediate stage, passing the Foundation or having any graduation other than Fine Arts is necessary. Upon completing the Intermediate stage, you can register for the Final stage. After completing the Intermediate or Final stages, you must undergo 15 months of training unless exempted based on your experience.

Examinations are held twice a year, starting on June 2 and December 26. You can register for the course at any time during the year. However, you need to wait at least nine months to write both groups of exams together or six months for writing one group.

I am a final year graduation student. I have had a big confusion in choosing a career; my options varied from Ph.D. to MBA to mass communication to NIFT to CA. But now, I have decided to pursue CS. :idea:

Could someone please guide me on the procedures for enrollment, training, good coaching institutes, and other important information regarding CS? Seniors, pleeeeeeeeease help.

I read this advertisement with great interest with each comment. Finally, I come to the conclusion that this is one among advertisements... roadside Madari and Zamure kind of act on a website to promote educational courses. It's common sense if one is an HR professional, what makes him or her suddenly switch professions to CS. It's a bogus advertisement which is totally misleading.

I spent 18 years in HR, worked in many companies, and never came across someone with such a weekend approach towards certification. Finally, HR definitely earns more than CS. Most company secretaries are equipped with LL.B; therefore, if she is pursuing CS, she has to complete LL.B to become competitive.

What a faltu way to make a mess of education and its valuation. To become a company secretary, it takes 5 to 10 years of experience to reach some respectable salary or sum. Badlu

Good to see you giving career advice to students. I am new to this forum and have joined it only a few days back. Your reply to Saravana is okay, but telling him that a CS course is ten times that of a BL is not only wrong but also misleading. Please take care while advising anyone. A BL degree is the only course that enables a person to interpret law. You must have heard about National School of Law, the Law University Pune, or Symbiosis School of Law running BL programs; they all have an incomparable reputation. No doubt, the Company Secretary course is a reputable one, but it is an entirely different field and cannot be compared with a BL course. So, instead of comparing any two or three courses, it is essential to first understand a candidate's objectives, and only then should they opt for a course.
