Torn Between MBA in Finance and HR: How Do I Choose the Right Path for My Career?

By way of introduction, I am Mohammed Bilal Ahmed, currently pursuing an MBA. My undergraduate qualification is BCom Honours in Finance and Investments. I have 2 years and 4 months of work experience in the audit division at EY. I am currently torn between two specializations, namely Finance and HR. I excel in both of these subjects and also possess work experience in the field of finance. However, I have always been interested in and passionate about HR since my undergraduate days. Due to a lack of growth opportunities, I am truly conflicted about choosing HR over finance.

Pursuing a Career in HR

If you are passionate about HR and find yourself suitable for the HR field, then without any hesitation, you should pursue a career in HR. Having regrets about not trying your favorite subject earlier can be detrimental. Firstly, you may not feel satisfied, and secondly, you may not be able to give your job your best effort if your interests, desires, and instincts do not align.

Growth Prospects in HR

Regarding growth prospects, with confidence, knowledge, and zeal, you can excel in any field you choose.

Choosing Between Finance and HR Specializations

Almost all organizations prefer Chartered Accountants for managing their finance departments. Investment banking companies and banks do consider MBA finance graduates, but they prefer MBAs from the top 10 management institutes.

On the other hand, an MBA in HR offers a wider range of job opportunities. If you are passionate about HR, pursuing an MBA from a non-top 10 institute could be a better choice. However, if you are enrolled in a top 10 institute, I recommend seeking career counseling to make an informed decision.

As per my knowledge, the finance field will experience more growth compared to HR. If you can work comfortably in finance, then I suggest you continue in finance itself because job satisfaction is essentially good salary.
