How Long Should It Take for a Company to Process and Accept My Resignation?

enamoredrj@gmail.com
Hi Gaurav Thakur,

I have resigned on 15-04-2016 with a one-month notice period until 15-05-2016. Could you please let me know how many days the company should take to process and accept my resignation?

Regards,

Gaurav Thakur

Acceptance of Resignation: Company Policy and Timing

It is not necessary for the company to provide an acceptance letter within a specific period. Depending on the company's policy, the timeframe may vary. In some cases, acceptance is immediate, while in others, it may be delayed due to the top management's refusal to grant permission to the reporting officer to proceed with the resignation or for other reasons.

However, since undue delay in accepting or rejecting a resignation can harm the employee, a diligent HR professional should always be vigilant and insist that the respective manager communicate the decision promptly. Therefore, you may ask HR to confirm your date of relieving.

Yes, I agree with the above reply from site members. It totally depends on the situation of the company. If any employee has more responsibility, then sometimes the company may extend the acceptance letter until a new person takes over the charge.

Endorsement of Comments on Resignation Process

I fully endorse the comments of learned Member Shri T.K. Madhu. As rightly pointed out by him, the company may accept and relieve the person on the same day and settle the issue, whereas it can or will extend the time depending on how important the post/work is. Most companies appoint a person after spending a lot of time, money, and energy, unlike hiring a low-skilled worker.

If the post/work is important, then the company needs to find a substitute. However, the period cannot be indefinite to avoid spoiling the career growth of another person. Every HR Head should plan in the best interest of the company as well as the employee, as seniors will also seek better prospects. The HR Head should establish a uniform policy to prevent harassment, heartburn, and other grievances.

I am not aware of the legal aspects; however, I would suggest continuing to send reminders to obtain acceptance with CC to the Supervisor/Manager/HRBP/HR Manager/Admin.
