Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau Arrests Officer for Bribery

The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau on Monday arrested a Class I officer for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from an accountant.

The accused has been identified as Laxman Bhujbal (47), an assistant labour commissioner posted at Kamgar Bhavan in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

ACB officials said the complainant, an accountant with a private firm in Mumbai, had applied for the renewal of his company’s labour permit through the Labour Department’s online permit renewal facility. The complainant subsequently visited Bhujbal’s office to follow up on the status of the renewal, and during this visit, Bhujbal allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 from him in exchange for approving the renewal.

The complainant then approached the ACB, and it registered a case against Bhujbal. Acting on the ACB’s instructions, the complainant expressed his willingness to pay the bribe to Bhujbal and on Monday went to his office with the bribe amount.

As soon as Bhujbal accepted the money, ACB officials, who were already waiting outside his office in plainclothes, arrested him.

“Bhujbal has been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and searches are currently underway at his office and residence,” an ACB officer said.

If the ACB investigates an application that has been under scrutiny for a long time, the truth of what is happening in this office will be revealed.

Rs. 15k is a small amount. The officers' demands are in lakhs.
