Original Certificates - Attrition Rate

Jyoti S. Ansari
Hi
I am working in Oil/Gas Industry as HR Officer and due to hight attrition rate our MD has asked to collect the Original Certificates from all our existing employees which I personally feel is not legal.
Kindly give me some advice on these points:
- By collecting Original Certificates, can we reduce attrition rate
- what are the other options to reduce this attrition problem
- Collecting Original Certificates is legal ???
Please revert as this is URGENT
Thanks

Collecting original certificates is not illegal.
However candidates would be reluctant to join you once they come to know that they have to submitt their originals.
To reduce attrition, first find the root cause for the same and once you find the cause you can work towards retaining your employess.

Hi,
You cant make the attrition rate down by asking for the originals. Even if you retain the originals with you you cant keep them with you if the person leaves your organisation. But ofcourse you will not be able to get the talent by using such practice. Rather better option is to go for bond period but for that too you have to first get the legal advice.

Hi Joyti,
Question: What happens if people don't want to give you their original certificates? Fire them?
What are you going to do then?
You can't force people to give you their personal belongings and i think it is not illegal to ask but it is wrong to insist.
My humble thoughts

sorry... missed this one out.
You have got to find other ways and means to prevent or reduce the problem.
Find out the real reason first then tackle the issue.
My humble thoughts

Hi,
As suggested by other members, you have to dig in to the reasons for high Attrition. This may be a reason for looking in to your recruitment process.
a) Which are the positions that have high attrition ?
b) Are you hiring the right people for the right job ?
c) Are the job description clear for each positions ?
d) Are any false promises are being made during hiring process ?
finally .....
e) Identify the managers under whom, attrition is maximum and counsel / Train them on retention --- People leave Managers not organisations.
hope this helps,

Hi,
I feel you should first find out the root cause of attrition.
Secondly you cant stop anyone from leaving the organisation if they have decided.Ans you have to submit their originals once they quit.
It is better to adopt bond policy for which many candidates are not ready for .
So try to find the root cause of attrition.
All the Best
With warm regards

Hello everyone,
In My Opinion
1. You can tell them to show their original documents, no need to keep them in record. You can put the photcopies duly signed by gazatted officer.
2. Try to retain the Potential employees, even at high cost. its very difficult to find these emloyees

Please Suggest
Where it is mentioned that the original certificates can be kept by employer. Is there any law/Act/case law suggesting this things

Good question by csjmohanty74,
First of all we must understand that all testimonials of the employees or candidates appearing or interview is his personal property. No organization cannot force except for the reason to varify the origional authenticity of document and not fake that to for limited timeframe where organization has to return to the employee his documents.
Just for the interst of being employed you cannot force employee to sacrifice his life to your organization. Your boss is totally uncivilised and he is criminal minded person. He cannot forcibly thereaten employees either you submit origional or he will terminate employees, this is bad behaviour.
For his information you exhibit my reply to him.
If you have to retain employee you can by adopting good HR practices or market practices and benchmarking best practices to attract, retain and reward policies.
