Common Interview Mistakes: Are You Unknowingly Hurting Your Chances?

excelencia
Interview Preparation Tips

You are all prepared to face the interview, and of course, your heart must be racing. Avoid these common mistakes that you may knowingly or unknowingly make, which can lessen your chances of selection.

Punctuality and Preparation

Be on time or arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time. Being too early or late does not look good. Carry at least four copies of your updated resume, each well tucked in a folder (at least carry one). Have a notepad and blank white papers in your bag. Bring your pen along with you, and ensure it is functional.

Dress Code and Personal Grooming

Be well-dressed but not overdressed. Never wear a 3-piece suit with a tie and bow. Clean your shoes with a napkin, not using your trousers, and ensure they are polished. Never wear white socks.

Company Knowledge and Etiquette

Remember the name of the company where you have applied (amazingly, many people forget it). Pronounce the name of the company correctly. Wash your face and eyes before the interview. Keep your phone switched off or on silent; vibration mode is distracting. If you wear a wristwatch, it should be working and showing the correct time.

Avoid Unprofessional Habits

No smoking, chewing tobacco, or using mouth fresheners at least 30 minutes before the interview.

Preparation for the Interview

Be well-prepared about the company and the industry, besides understanding the general economic situation. You should demonstrate your knowledge about the company and align your career accomplishments with what the company is seeking. Show confidence in the way you speak and behave. Maintain eye contact with the interview team while answering questions in a polite and courteous manner. Do not avoid eye contact while speaking. Display courtesy to the receptionist and other staff during initial interactions. Your CV should not falsify any facts, work experience, or qualifications. Ensure you are well-rested, alert, and fully prepared for your interview. Exhibit an alert and cheerful attitude during the interview.

Further to my above comment, every interviewee should see the interview as an opportunity to showcase their knowledge, skills, and personality. They should use the chance to demonstrate how they are a perfect fit for the vacancy.

In addition to the above lists of the learned members, ensure your fingernails are clean and well-cut. I have seen candidates neglecting this simple yet important aspect as it speaks volumes about your personal organization and hygiene.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for sharing this; however, I want to add a few more points:

1. Never wear new shoes because there are chances of shoe bites, which will affect the walk of the interviewee.
2. Always go through the website of the company before the interview.
3. In case the interview is held in another city, it's advisable to be there a day before or to familiarize yourself with the location of the company.

Thank you.
