Understanding Skills Matrix: How to Create and Maintain One for Technical Teams?

Hi,

I am working in an IT company as an HR Executive. Could you please explain what a skills matrix is? How can one establish a skills matrix for technical people? What is the process for creating one? What parameters should be considered when developing a skills matrix? Additionally, when should a skills matrix be instituted, and how frequently should it be updated?

In the skill matrix sheet, just mention all the technical terms like Java, J2EE, etc. It should be structured as follows: name, followed by the technical terms. You can update it every month after an evaluation test. Additionally, you need to rate each term on a scale from 1 to 10 and keep updating it. Finally, list the training programs that need improvement, as this is what competency is all about.

Hi Sonali, The Skill Matrix is a very useful management tool for HR. You cannot initiate Training & Development of employees until you develop a skill matrix for your employees. It shows at a glance how much cross-training you have in your organization between different people and different tasks. You can use different types of formats available for preparing a skill matrix for your technical people. I have developed a role-based skill matrix for my organization, which I can share with you.
