Torn Between HR and Teaching: Can I Switch Back to HR Later if I Choose Teaching Now?

Shalini Siva
I am Shalini, working as an HR Executive in a small company for the past 5 months and earning only 7k. In the beginning, my director told me that for only 2 months, my stipend would be 7k, and after that, I would surely get more than that. Likewise, he informed me so when I asked for a salary hike after completing my training. However, he is now telling me to wait for still another 3 months.

Career Dilemma: HR vs. Teaching

In this case, I have received a job offer at a college as a lecturer. I am unsure if I should move into the teaching field and whether I can switch my career back to HR in the future. I am really confused; please provide your suggestions, seniors.

Hi, Ms. Shalini,

You have to decide about your career. If you feel being a lecturer is better, then you can join a college. If you want a career in HR, then it is better to look for opportunities in the HR field only. Changing from HR to a lecturer and then switching back to HR later will be difficult. I am not saying it's impossible, but it may pose challenges.

Thank you.

You have to decide about your career - what exactly you like and what satisfies you as an HR professional or lecturer. Don't only focus on money; make sure to enjoy your work as well. So, think about it.

Jeevarathnam sir, thank you for your reply. However, there isn't much exposure in my company, so I am unable to learn new things. That's why I am thinking of going to college.

Hi Shalini,

Everyone will have one dream job, what is yours? If looking upon the teaching profession is only for the salary, then let me tell you, the theoretical knowledge which we gain from college will only help us speak in HR language. When it comes to the practical situation, you need to be hands-on. Also, having experience in the teaching profession will not be considered as core experience when it comes to Human Resources. Good luck!

Thank you, Mahr, for your reply. My dream job is HR, but my siblings tell me that after marriage, teaching is considered to be secure. Moreover, they believe it is not suitable to be in the HR field after marriage. This has caused much confusion for me. I am uncertain whether to pursue teaching or remain in HR. Otherwise, I would always prefer to be in HR.

Dear Shalini,

Be very clear about your decisions in life. Depending on family or friends to decide for you is wrong. You need to be sure about your vision. What is right for your siblings may not necessarily be right for you. Their life is very different from yours. So, decide where you would be comfortable working and then choose the same.

Well said, Ashutosh Thakre. Thank you very much for your reply. Since I am very new to this field, I can't forecast my future in HR. However, I am now much clearer. Once again, thanks to all who spent their valuable time on me.
