Hi, I am an M.Com graduate and have 10 years of experience as an Accounts Executive. Four months ago, I resigned from my last job and moved to Europe with my husband for a year in hopes of finding employment here. However, it's very challenging for dependents to secure jobs here, especially for non-Europeans. As a result, I have commenced an online Executive MBA program from IICT, Lucknow.

Career Gap Concerns

My query is, upon my return to India, will the career gap pose a challenge in securing a good job? Can I explain my situation to potential employers, and if so, will it be considered a valid reason?

Additionally, I have predominantly worked in non-IT companies thus far. With my EMBA degree, can I expect to receive job offers from IT firms? Your guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Your pen name arouses curiosity, but the message posted shows admirable maturity and concern. You are already a postgraduate with experience in the relevant field. The reason for not continuing to work when you have gone abroad has been explained very well. The truth will hold. Moreover, you are trying to qualify yourself instead of idling away by stating the nature of difficulty in getting an overseas job. You are now gainfully utilizing your time, and this will be acceptable (within the framework of competition) when you search for a job later. Regarding what job you will get, please do not bother about it now. Study well and come out with flying colors in academics. As far as the future job is concerned, cross the bridge when you come to it.

Gaps in CVs get noticed (that is the plain truth). But the gap that you may have has a good reason, and you are adding to your educational qualifications besides acquiring a wider horizon through foreign travel. You need to present all of this professionally in your CV. I do not think your future employer will take a dim view of a one-year gap in this case.

Raghunathan and Nathrao are right. I am sure there is no bar for you to work in a charitable organization without remuneration. Is your husband's job in Europe for the duration of only one year?
