Career Advancement in HR with a Technical Background

I completed a B.E. in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) from a reputed university. However, I started my career as an HR executive in a consultancy and have successfully completed 2 years and 6 months in this role. Now, I want to continue and build my career in the same field, but due to my educational background, I am losing many opportunities in MNCs.

Seeking Advice on Career Progression

My query is, how can I proceed further? Are there any part-time courses or certification courses that can boost my career and provide more opportunities? Kindly share your inputs.

Regards and Thanks.

Hi,

It's not mandatory, but if you really want to pursue a career in HR, I'll advise you to consider doing an MBA or any other HR-related course. Through this, your opportunities will become vast. You can explore programs offered by reputable universities or consider taking correspondence courses available online.

It depends on different companies. Some companies look at overall experience as important for them, while some prefer a full-time course from a reputed institute. You can check the company's website for their requirements. Additionally, you can pursue a full-time two-year MBA from a good university, which also offers placement opportunities if you can afford it.

Correspondence MBA has much less value than full-time MBA. Some companies specifically mention no correspondence MBA. I would suggest Executive MBA classes after you acquire working experience.

I am referring to Bangalore here. An MBA has become a must for most of the CMMI companies, especially when you move to the next level; they expect you to understand the HR language. Nowadays, I have seen companies rejecting HR profiles with 10+ years of experience because they don't have an MBA from XLRI, TISS, IIM, etc., even though they hold an MBA degree from reputed institutes. If you are planning for an MBA, take a break and do it in any one of the top B-Schools. If this mode does not suit you, then as Nathrao suggested, you can do an Executive MBA course from the above-mentioned colleges. It is a little expensive; however, the valuation is higher compared to other institutes. Also, I think you need to have at least 5 years of experience to apply.

Yes, as suggested by all the seniors, proper degree/qualification is essential. Yet another fact is the experience. HR is one of the most actively involved verticals in any business. While the appropriate qualifications pave the path for your entry into the field of HR, your experience and capability will lead you to success. This forum has been an inspiration to many of us in understanding the practical situations and HR processes being practiced in the industry.

I wish you all the good luck.

Thanks,
Bijay

Hi, I'm Jayaprakash. I'm currently working as an HR, but I don't have much detail about HR. I need to improve myself in my career. Please tell me a helpful suggestion to improve my career as well as myself.

I'll be frank; I only have average communication skills. How can I improve my skills? Please suggest some good methods.

Qualification is a visibility provided to your merit. Yet, it would be tested regularly, especially in interviews for a job or promotion, to confirm whether there is merit in the certified qualification. MBA, like MBBS and MD, displays prestige in acquired qualifications by its very mention. But no individual can feel satisfied by the instant prestige but build merit over it on a continuous basis. To fully understand what an MBA could mean, read the attached article as well.
