Facing Extortion from Fake Mathadi Workers in Pune: What Are Your Legal Options?

chandrashekhar1961
We are in the engineering contracting business. Many times, we send materials such as pumps, air conditioners, etc., to various building sites in the Pune city area. Every time, some local people appear on the site and claim that they are Mathadi workers. They arrive on bullet bikes with gold ornaments, etc., and do not look like typical workers. They insist that we pay them money ranging from 2,000 for a small tempo to 50,000 for a container load. The most surprising thing is that they never actually do any work. The unloading, shifting, and lifting are all carried out by our staff, yet they still demand money. What do the rules say in such a case? Which government office can help us? Can we report this to the anti-extortion department?

Addressing Extortion Issues in Pune

CiteHR members belonging to Pune would be in a better situation to give specific suggestions. However, prima facie, this is a direct and clear extortion racket. Complaining to the Anti-extortion cell of the Pune Police is the only way.

Before you proceed, it is advisable to gather some background information about these individuals. Are they locals? Do they appear to have any political backing or background? Do other companies in your line of business also face this issue?

Answers to such inquiries would help in refining your approach towards the necessary steps you can and need to take.
