Is Switching to an HR Generalist Role in Bangalore Worth It After 2.5 Years in HR and Admin?

Hi. I have a total experience of 2.5 years as an Executive HR and Admin, but I don't have a good pay structure. In these 2.5 years, I have switched companies twice as there didn't seem to be any growth. Right now, I am looking for a job change. Will the job of an HR Generalist be suitable for me? Can you also tell me what package I should expect as I am based in Bangalore?

I do agree that salary is important for each and every person. Before considering a change, as you have limited experience, it is better for you to stay for some time. As HR professionals, we are required to work for longer periods. I suggest that you first focus on stabilizing yourself in your current assignments. Try to learn and explore core HR modules. Once you have gained more experience and knowledge, you can then consider making a change for a better pay structure.

As Jeevarathnam has mentioned, people in support functions like HR, Finance, etc., have to demonstrate stability. You also need to have your expectations of growth clear. Two changes in two years are not impressive, as prospective employers would view these short stints suspiciously.

I myself don't have much HR experience (1.2 years), however, I will suggest considering the below points:

1. Do you internally like the generalist role which you have done till now?
2. If not, which HR functions did you like the most?
3. Have you pursued a PG in HR? If not, consider a 6-month certification course from a reputable institute to enhance your skills and resume.
4. HR Business Partner roles are very common nowadays in IT/ITES companies; you may consider exploring that role in the future.

Hi Nikhil, thanks for your reply. I am an MBA in HR. Right now, I am handling both the roles of an HR Executive and an HR Generalist.

Roles of an HR Executive

The roles of an HR Executive, in short, are as follows:

1. Shortlisting profiles and conducting interviews.
2. Meeting with the college placement coordinators to build relationships.
3. Setting up team-building activities in the company for the employees.

HR Generalist Responsibilities

HR Generalist responsibilities include:

1. Background verifications.
2. Coordinating with vendors.
3. Following up with clients for payments.

I am not satisfied with my job here. I need to learn more, and there doesn't seem to be any scope for learning.

Being an HR professional, we have to work for a longer period. First, try to get stabilized in your assignments. Try, learn, and explore core HR modules. Then you can consider a change with a better pay structure.

As there doesn't seem to be any scope for learning here, I want to learn more. I thought of pursuing SAP HR, but it turned out to be quite expensive. I hold an MBA in HR. Can you please advise me on how to improve and learn?

Hi,

I have also changed companies at a frequency which is not good. However, I also find that the job remains somewhat similar; we face different kinds of challenges in different companies. Based on my mistakes, I can only suggest that if it's not so daunting, try to stay in your current job for a total of 2 years and then jump. Try to get more exposure to other HR functions like L&D and PMS to add value to your CV. Don't give up. All the best.
