Should I Accept a Lower Designation for Better Learning Opportunities in a Startup?

chandrika S
Hi HR members, I am working as DM - HR for an Indian manufacturing company. I have received an offer from another company, which is a startup in India but well established in Dubai. They are offering me a lower designation as HR officer with a very slight increase in salary. The current company lacks learning opportunities, prompting me to consider moving. However, I am unsure whether I should accept this offer, as it involves a demotion in my designation and would mean restarting my career. The new role seems to offer a lot of learning potential, but I have some doubts. Please advise me on what I should do. Thank you.

Hi,

You can request them to retain the same position so that it will be better. Sometimes, accepting a lower position might affect your future and it might even benefit your career development because you feel like you are getting an opportunity for learning. Even a learning opportunity is mandatory.

Thank you, Jeevarathnam.

I did ask for retaining the position, but they don't have such a position in their hierarchy. Initially, it was offered for HR Assistant, which I have upgraded to Officer. They have promised to upgrade to an HRBP role later depending on performance. So, I feel more confused: is it a good offer to accept at such a lower designation, considering I have 7 years of experience in an HR generalist role.

Learning opportunities and challenging opportunities are important aspects of all jobs. There is nothing wrong with accepting a "demotion," as you term it. If you pick up the job well, you may even go to Dubai. Who knows? See how the move fits into your career plan.

Dear Chandrika,

I do agree with Mr. Nathrao, but please think well that if you get the opportunity to go to Dubai, will you... If you are not satisfied with them, again you will have to look for a change and will you be able to show that on your resume?

Thank you.

Dear Chandrika,

Change is the spice of life when it is for the betterment and elevation of your career. Mere designation cannot give you rewards when it lacks knowledge acquisition and management.

Please consider the new role carefully before making a decision.

Best regards,

Only a slight increase in salary, displacement, and a lower designation at a start-up. Is the increase worth the displacement and the new designation? Points to consider: This involves moving away from members of your family unless the family members are also joining. Why not consider the career prospects in your existing company? These are just my thoughts.
