Strategies for Developing Technical Job Descriptions in an Automobile Company

ankita1900
I want to prepare job descriptions for an automobile company. Any suggestions on how to understand the technical and behavioral aspects? Please guide.

Thanks

Hi, Job descriptions for the different positions in an Automobile Company. First of all, classify the different departments of your organization. Then, classify them into the Admin department and Production department. Proceed hierarchy wise, and search for job descriptions on job portals. To create job descriptions for the entire company, you must first establish a proper organizational chart.

Thank you for your prompt response.
I have the organizational hierarchy.
But the positions are all of engineers, designers, project managers, project lead etc.
Their work is entirely technical about which I don’t have any prior knowledge.
I need guidance on how to edit the JDs. Also how should I proceed with this work and what more value addition could be done.

Hello Ankita,

First, speak to the Dept Heads for the JDs of those under them. That way, you will have the First-cut JD. Please don't expect them to give you the soft skills needed for each role; they will only be able to provide technical content in THEIR language. You will have to convert the technical jargon into more layman terminology. You can post those JDs here, and the members can then make suggestions.

As a rule of thumb, it will take at least 3-4 iterations to reach the Final JDs; this is the first time your Company is doing them. Also, please note that the final content of the JDs will depend on the purpose. If it's for recruitment, they will be much more detailed. If it's for ISO or similar purposes, it will be a shorter version.

All the best.

Thank you very much for sharing your suggestions. It's great that all of you have posted your feedback. I have reviewed all job descriptions and also made some edits. I have adjusted the alignment, updated the position objective, refined the overall template, and reorganized the sections for education, experience, and behavioral skills. I have separated technical and non-technical skills. I am now focusing on the technical aspect and trying to schedule time with managers or engineers.

Do you have any advice on how I can further improve this work? Thank you once again.

PS- I have to edit job descriptions that are helpful in recruitment, but are also understandable to non-tech people; not too technical. However, they should have the details and include all responsibilities of the respective employee.

Hello Ankita,

I'm glad that the suggestions from the members are helpful. As suggested earlier, once you are done collecting and collating the technical details, please post a couple of job descriptions (JDs) in this forum. Once you receive suggestions, I am confident that you can take it from there to fine-tune the rest of the JDs as well. However, do not make them too non-technical. By the end of the day, they should be attractive to the candidates, who are primarily techies. If the JDs are too non-technical, there is a risk of candidates misunderstanding that the positions/roles are more non-technical in nature (managerial, support, etc.), unless they truly are.

Best regards,
TS
