Struggling with Career Choices and English Skills Before Moving to Australia: Any Advice?

Hi friends, I am an MBA graduate. After completing my MBA, I attended many interviews, but all were in vain. Later on, I joined a reputed school as a pre-primary teacher and worked there for 2 years. Unexpectedly, I got married and left the job without giving any prior notice. As it was my mistake, they didn’t accept my resignation and don’t want to give me my experience certificate.

My husband has settled in Australia, so once I receive my visa, I will go there. As per my husband’s advice, I decided to improve my English. Could anyone please help me with how I can practice my English, as I don’t have anyone who can speak to me in English at home? How can I participate in discussions to improve my language?

Another thing is, if I go there, how can I find a job, or is it better to join a course that will help me in my future career? Even though I’m an MBA graduate, I don’t find much skill in myself as I am very comfortable with the teaching job. I have only 6 months to practice my language. I hope I can get replies to my queries. If anyone finds mistakes in the information I have given here, such as spelling or grammatical mistakes, please let me know.

Improving Your English Communication Skills

Learning and improving yourself in any language is a matter of practice and effort. Here are some simple tips:

- Read English newspapers.
- Buy magazines like Femina, Health, etc.
- Listen to English news every day.
- Speak in English with your friends.
- Look up word meanings in a dictionary and add them to your vocabulary.

You have only about 6 months before you go to Australia, so consider joining some short-term computer courses to improve your computer skills. You can also join some English conversational classes in your hometown.

Sundaram & Nathrao have already given you very valid and useful suggestions to improve your English. Coming to your primary query, "Whether To Join In A Course Or To Search A Job," I suggest focusing JUST on English—you have only ~6 months, and joining a job knowing you would be leaving soon is NOT fair to the company.

As far as finding a job in Australia, your husband would be a better guide for this. From what I know about the Australian job scenario, theoretical knowledge doesn't really help. I suggest timing your job-hunting efforts for Australian jobs a month or so BEFORE you embark. Since your experience has been in school teaching, check out any certifications or short-term diplomas that you could do here and that could be helpful to you there.
