Should HR Students Add Finance Courses to Boost Job Prospects in Financial Firms?

I am an MBA 1st-year student and I have a query regarding my specialization in HR. I have heard from some seniors that nowadays, financial companies are seeking HR professionals with a strong background in finance as well. Should I consider taking additional subjects in finance alongside my MBA in HR to enhance my prospects in the job market? To what extent is this advice accurate?

Hi Priya,

Your question depends on your thinking. You are the best to evaluate the way you want to start your career. It's not mandatory to opt for a special course in finance if you aim to get into a financial-based firm. For example, there are HRs in software firms who do not necessarily need to learn or be familiar with related software, but they should understand the domain they are working in and have to survive... that's all.

It's better to wait for more responses; don't be in a hurry. There is plenty of time for you to decide, and the community here is here to help each other.

Don't neglect to have a clear discussion with your senior regarding how it will help you in finance and what your participation will be in return. This will be an added advantage for your future. It is not compulsory for you to undergo finance.

According to me, if you have the option of also specializing in Finance in addition to HR, do not hesitate to do so. No knowledge is useless. I have been in HR for the last 16 years. One of the main strengths I have always discovered about myself is that I have an edge over many of my fellow peers. I do not have to depend on the finance team; I am not and cannot be taken for a ride by Finance/Accounts personnel. I am not overwhelmed by financial data or figures, and moreover, my understanding of finance/accounting has, in fact, enabled and strengthened my position. You can create your own budgets, interact on equal terms with any other professional in the corporate world, and not be overawed or left out if you develop your conceptual understanding of the subject and strive to keep yourself abreast. According to me, it will certainly improve your analytical ability and help you better in decision-making or substantiating your points of view in discussions or presentations. Moreover, I have always observed underconfident CEOs over-relying on the Finance team (no offense meant to finance professionals!). I suggest that you seize this opportunity.
