Exploring Shift Scheduling: Can We Have Different Round-the-Clock Timings? What Does the Factory Act Say?

kamal saini
Dear all,

Please guide me if there is round-the-clock shift scheduling different from 06:00-14:30, 14:00-22:30, and 22:00-06:30. Is it possible? What does the factory act rule say? Is a working day inclusive of lunch or rest for 8 hours or 08:30?

Please provide me with your most valuable advice on this topic.

The shift timing is 8 hours for a circular shift covering 24 hours; you need to give a break of half an hour within those 8 hours. This is as per the Factories Act under the clause prohibition of overlapping shifts. Hence, you can have shifts from 6 am to 2 pm; 2 pm to 10 pm, and 10 pm to 6 am, which is ideal for all its convenience.

Mr. Jagat Kumar's views would have satisfied your query. Generally, a specific lunchtime is given only for the GENERAL SHIFT that starts at 8 AM or 9 AM. The practice prevalent among people going for lunch or dinner is a mutually understood relay activity. For short periods, one technician/operator goes for the meal while his other colleague on duty additionally covers his spot as well.

As far as dividing 24 hours into eight-hour shifts is concerned, some even start at 7 or 8 AM, adding 8 hours thrice from the start time to create three shifts.
