Facing Legal Threats from a Past Internship: How Should I Handle This Situation?

rajan0913
I joined the company as an intern and signed one document, which was just the internship form mentioning a 15-day notice period. They were paying me $4500 in cash. They told me that they would provide the offer letter after three months or later. I worked there for four months, but they did not give me the offer letter. I then received a better opportunity from another company, so I joined that company and sent my resignation using their email ID. Now, after one year, they are saying, "You have not been coming to work for nearly a year. We have noticed that you have joined another company without resigning or completing your exit formalities with us. Please contact us immediately for settlements and due process, or we will take legal action against you, levy penalties, and inform your current company about hiring you." Please advise me on what I should do. Thank you.

Dear Member,

Chill out. Ignore their correspondence as they do not have any contract, and they have not issued any appointment letter to you. If you have any outstanding dues, ethically, you should settle them.

Since they only provided an offer letter, the earlier letter for the internship will hold good. At the time of leaving the organization, you have to give them 15 days' notice or an amount in lieu of the 15 days' notice required to be given by you. Therefore, please submit a resignation and inform them that no appointment letter was issued to you. Additionally, you can state that if the management desires, you are willing to pay the salary for the fifteen-day notice period. When a person joins an organization, they should exit in a professional and courteous manner.
