New to HR? Seeking Guidance on Understanding and Keeping Up with Indian Labor Laws

deepasatish12@gmail.com
Hi Seniors,

As I'm new to the HR profession, my superior told me to go through the labor laws and their case studies and to inform him to take discussions on that. Please let me know if labor laws get amended every year. Also, guide me on how to gain knowledge in labor laws. If possible, could you share the documents related to labor laws so that it will be helpful for me to take his test?

Dear member, you can get information regarding various Central labour laws as applicable in India from the website of the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Central Govt. Study the same and try to see whether they are applicable in your unit and if so, whether compliance is being made.

So far as State Labour laws are concerned, you can get the same from the website of the labor department in which State your unit is located and see if compliance with said laws is being made properly in the unit.

In case of any specific doubt or question, you can raise it in this forum for appropriate comments by the seniors/experienced HR people in this forum.

Dear Deepa ji, Your superior has instructed you to familiarize yourself with labor laws and related case studies. As you are new to this field, your first step should be to determine which labor laws are applicable to you and to understand the key features of the relevant legislation.

Understanding Labor Laws

The primary documents related to labor laws are the Bare Acts. Purchase the latest edition from a book stall, as the Labor Law Agency releases a new edition annually. While labor laws may not change every year, it is advisable to acquire the updated Bare Acts annually. Avoid relying on labor department websites or other online sources as they may contain outdated versions.

Steps to Study Labor Laws

It is not possible to read through all the Acts in one go. Begin by studying the main features and then delve into the key provisions of each Act. Most Bare Acts contain tips on the main features and provisions in the initial sections. Additionally, you may refer to guides or handbooks on labor laws such as "Labour Laws" by SR Samant. You can also explore the provided links, but ensure to verify any updates. Keep the Bare Acts handy for quick reference.

Enjoy the learning experience and good luck.

It is not advisable to mess up with laws without grasping anything. Please note down the areas of work you are doing/assigned and the applicable laws, or a portion of it.
