Stuck Between Jobs: How to Handle an Offer Withdrawal After Resigning

nairbaiju1988
Hi, I received an offer letter after my interviews and discussions, which I duly accepted after resigning from my current company. However, I got a call from the company that offered me the position, stating that they were going to put my selection on hold indefinitely because the person I was supposed to replace has withdrawn his resignation. My current company won't let me retract my resignation as they have already selected my replacement. In this situation, there is a chance I might be jobless once my notice period at the current company expires. I request your help with this situation.

This is a very awkward situation for you to be in. Go to the company and clearly explain that, based on their offer and your acceptance, the employment was confirmed. You have further taken steps to hand over your responsibilities of the previous job to avoid getting into an embarrassing state. The intervention of higher management will have to be sought from your side. Put your problem in writing to the new company.

If your current company has not accepted your resignation, you may immediately withdraw it. Merely the selection of your successor does not mean that an offer might have been sent to him. You may personally contact that selectee to request what is needed, if possible. If nothing materializes, please follow up.

Thanks,
Sushil
