Windsock Requirements: Which Buildings Need Them and What Are the Legal Standards?

abhaygirish1
Kindly guide me on the following:

1. For which type of building, storage, or factory is a windsock requirement applicable?
2. Is it legally applicable?
3. What are the standard dimensions for a windsock? Are there any standards for the same?
4. Are there any location criteria standards for windsock installation?

Please guide me.

Wind Sock Installation and Legal Compliance

It is required to install a wind sock at the top of any tall structure in the vicinity of the site. In case there is a risk of the structure getting damaged during an emergency, it is desirable to have alternate wind sock(s) as required. At least one wind sock should be visible from any part of the site. Site personnel must be trained in reading the atmospheric conditions based on the status of the wind sock.

A wind sock is useful in toxic releases that are strongly influenced by wind speed, weather conditions, leak rate, or mass released at a particular place. It is also important in fire emergencies as it guides firefighters for firefighting and provides evacuation routes for general employees/people from the site.

Wind socks may be used in industries where there are chances of air pollution or for studying the plume behavior of chimneys/stacks.

Legal Compliance

In terms of legal compliance, to the best of my knowledge, there is no direct requirement as per the Factories Act, but it falls under the purview of Section 7A(c) - General duties of the Occupier for providing information/instruction; and Section 41B(4) - preparing an Onsite Emergency plan.

Dear Mr. Verma, Thanks for the reply. I am searching for any standard related to it and legal applicability for normal (including non-hazardous) industry. Let us wait for a reply from other seniors.
