Compensation and Insurance for Outdoor Employees

I would like to know the best way to cover an outdoor employee (employee continuously on client visits) and how they need to be compensated if any accident or injury happens while traveling through their own vehicle or public transport during duty hours. Are there any accidental insurance policies available for such employees? Kindly suggest.

You can cover them with a personal accident policy, which is available from all insurance companies. Based on the risk, you can determine the sum insured. The premiums are nominal compared to the claim; the premium is almost negligible.

If such employees are covered under the provisions of the ESIC Act and maintain all reasonable records to substantiate that the employee was on company duty outdoors, in the eventuality, ESIC provisions will take care of all the liabilities towards claims relating to employment injury, including death.

In case the employee is not a covered employee under the ESIC provisions, you have to take the Employee Compensation Policy available with the insurance company. In the event of the death of an employee or loss of earning capacity due to bodily injury, compensation can be obtained through the authority, i.e., the Employee Compensation Commissioner appointed under that Act.

A Personal Accident Policy or incorrect coverage under the above two Acts will not release the statutory liability of the employer in the event of any untoward incident occurring to an employee while on duty.
