Professional Tax Confusion: Do We Need to Pay for Directors in Calcutta Too?

gajendranerpawar
My company is registered in Maharashtra and is a private limited firm. We used to pay the Professional Tax in Maharashtra for our directors. This company also has its branches in Calcutta, and we pay Professional Tax in Maharashtra for our company and company employees. Now, do we have to pay the professional tax of directors in Calcutta also? Kindly suggest.

Dear Gajendranerpawar, Profession Tax is a tax on professions, trades, callings, and employment imposed by the State Government in accordance with Article 276 of the Constitution of India. If you are engaged in any profession, trade, calling, or employment in any State or Union Territory (UT) where the law mandates this tax, you are required to pay it. If you are engaged in professions, trades, callings, or employment in more than one State, you must pay this tax in each State that has enacted the law.

Different States have varying rates and methods of collection for this tax. For example, Kolkata imposes this tax, meaning you are obligated to pay it even if you are already paying it in Maharashtra.
