Made a Mistake with My Salary Details: Will Background Check Catch It? Need Advice!

dingdongraipur
I had accepted an offer from an IT MNC in Mumbai. While accepting the offer, I increased my variable bonus from 50 to 90 thousand accordingly, and I edited and submitted the appointment letter. I now realize that I made a big mistake.

I filled out the background verification form. Will the background agency be able to verify the actual CTC details? I submitted the original salary slip where 50 thousand is reflected on the salary slip.

I have not yet joined the new organization.

I know that I made a big mistake, and there was no need to increase my salary minimally. Percentage-wise, it is a 6-7% increase in my CTC. Currently, I am working at another big MNC.

Kindly advise.

Dingdongraipur: The CBI is going to be arresting you unless you 'fess up to the change! (I couldn't help it). Please reach out to your HR Team, let them know that you made an error, and they'll do the needful (I hope so!).

Background Checks in MNCs

And this is the sole reason MNCs have 'background checks' - our cultural attitude to inflate CTC, Salary, etc.

Shall I contact HR and inform them that I submitted an incorrect document? Here is the real document. It is essentially a system-generated increment letter. What will their response be if I submit the actual document? Kindly advise.

No one can predict with any certainty what anyone's response would be in any situation! The decision is truly yours—inform them that you edited the document (which they will find out anyway if the investigation is thorough) and hope for the best, or don't and hope that you are not caught! Generally, any offer is subject to withdrawal if any false statements are found during verifications. If you join and such a material lie is discovered later, the company could be within its rights to cancel your appointment.

Integrity and Honesty

Integrity and honesty are the starting points of any relationship. Even at the very senior level of appointments, doubts about these can have severe consequences. I have an article somewhere that I'll try to dig out and post here. Offhand, the former CEO of Yahoo lost his job because he lied about his qualifications. There are many more examples like this!

Don't panic; just go and meet with your HR team. Submit a written letter stating that it was just a clerical mistake. I think they will definitely appreciate the honesty you have shown. Best of luck.

Don't panic. Send a correction email to your new HR.

Communicating with Your New Employer

Send the correct facts to your new employer and inform them to make an appropriate decision within 3 or 4 days. This will allow them to cancel the offer if they choose to do so, rather than terminating your employment after you have joined the organization.
