Dear seniors, can an employer deduct wages for latecoming for an employee who arrives late five times in a month, for 3-4 minutes each time?

If your HR policy manual covers that, then technically yes.

If the policy is silent on this issue, is it addressed in any Act?

It depends on the factory management's decision. To teach a lesson to latecomers, it is better to deduct 1/2 day for 4 hours, and for exceeding 4 hours, a full day should be marked as earned leave.

If my HR policy manual states that the deduction for being one hour late will be one day, can I deduct one day for being one hour late?

Thank you.

If it is written in the HR policy, then an employee arriving one hour late will not be allowed to come on duty, will be marked as absent, and will have to apply for leave the next day. Our policy states that if any worker or staff member arrives late four times, i.e., between 10 minutes to 1 hour late, it will be considered as Earned Leave. We have allowed a grace period of 10 minutes for employees to join their duty. After the initial 10 minutes, every subsequent minute of lateness is recorded.

Thank you.

Policy on Late Arrival and Work Hours

Please don't allow any grace time to anybody because all are paid for 8 (eight) hours of work. The management should clearly and categorically inform that late coming, which is indiscipline, cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. If anybody reports for work beyond the shift commencement time, they will not be permitted to work. There should not be any deviation in the system as it may cause some problems in the initial stages; however, after some time, it will become a healthy practice in the establishment.
