Ex-employment Verification From Previous Company.

Dear Seniors,
For any ex-employee verification employee\'s previous company is asking some amount to pay and get the verification done.
is it ethical?

If it is true as quoted by you, act of such company amounts to unethical to demand money from ex-employees to get the verification done in respect of its ex-employees credentials. I think without the knowledge of higher management, some unscrupulous persons in HR dept may indulge this type of acts. So it is better to bring these issues to the notice of higher management to ascertain the facts with regard to the policy of company.If their version is also concurs with HR dept, you can understand that whole company is having unethical policy and in such a case nobody can do any thing except to make a complaint with Registrar of Companies about this.

Thanks for the response.
By their response mail we received, it seems management is also aware about such practices in the company. As they are asking the DD in favor of company with Service tax.
Company is Delhi based and Member of Data Security Council of India (DSCI),NASSCOM,FICCI & others.
Where is escalate about this unethical practice?

If new employer engages some person / private security agencies to make an inquiry into the credentials submitted by selected candidate with his old employer company and for doing such act, if new employer pays amount to such private security firm could not said to be unethical. But my point is that if old company demand money for giving reply to the query of new employer with regard to credentials of their ex-employee is unethical
