In western countries, discrimination in job based on sexual orientation is illegal. In India, we can still get away with that.
Let me recall an incident which happened a few years back. There was a post for typist cum data entry operator in one company. After many tests and a round of interview, there was a tie between a male and a female interviewee. The employer was biased towards male. As per his logic, the female would marry in some time. She would not be able to sit back late if needed. The company was looking for a long term career with the new recruit. The female will not be tough to handle pressure.
I guess they were preconceived notions of the employer. Inspite of the female candidate doing better in the last round of interview, the male candidate was selected. The HR stood dumb as the employer himself had his notion told to them.
As a shock to the employer and the company, the new male recruit left the company in around two months as he got a better opportunity overseas. It was the peak time of the year and the female candidate was sought. The company got her as she was looking around for a job. She continued with the company for many years, even after she was married, had two kids and the employer had to apologize to her at one point.
Today, HR is being replaced with "Talent". There is so much happening around the world. If we are still stuck with gender issues at workplace, then we have no right to call ourselves 'Professionals".
