Feeling Lost About HR Manager Roles? Seeking Advice on Skills and Responsibilities

sunilkatal1988@gmail.com
Hello all seniors, this is Sunil Katal, looking for your practical experience and advice. I have spent 2 years at a small IT company where there is no systematic process of working; everything is done according to the Director's will. I have now resigned from this company and am seeking a job in a reputed company. However, I still have fears because I lack exact knowledge about the systematic working processes of companies.

Questions About HR Management

This leads me to the following questions:
1. What are the job responsibilities of an HR manager?
2. What skills should an HR manager possess?

Could you please suggest what steps I should take?

Thanks,
Sunil K.

Welcome to the world of realities. Your experience is not uncommon. Many small firms are run by the whims and fancies of the person at the helm of affairs. In general, corporates are professionally managed and have policies, systems, and procedures. Still, it may not be an ideal environment in all corporates. You can find very professionally managed small companies as well, but generally less often. The law of nature prevails—good and bad coexist—they are not size-dependent. By and large, corporates are expected to provide a better working environment, though exceptions remain.

Referring to Your Questions

Regarding your two questions, please refer to the Cite HR archives. Type your first query inside the box labeled "WHAT DO YOU NEED" that you find in the title bar right above. After typing in the box, press the 'research' button next to it. You will get a lot of information. You can also refer to "Related Information" and 'Download Thread' that you find on the right side of this message. Afterwards, repeat the procedure for your second query.

Advice for Your Career Path

Coming to your final question about what you should be doing, it is best answered by you. If you have good subject knowledge, an aptitude for work, and sincerity, you will certainly progress, irrespective of whether the firm is small or big. Your competencies, translated into performance, will take you to higher positions. So be bold and face the world. Wish you good luck in your endeavor.
