Understanding Sabbatical Leave in IT Companies

What is sabbatical leave and how does it fit into IT companies? Can anyone share a few policies that are followed by Indian companies? I am planning to design a policy shortly on this.

The concept of sabbatical leave is not prevalent in India. It may be more common abroad, which I am not familiar with. I tried searching online to learn more about it, but there was not much information available apart from the definition of sabbatical.

Sabbatical Leave in India

In the context of India, why are you considering implementing this type of leave in your HR policy?

Sabbatical Leave is applicable for the teachers of the University and colleges who have completed seven years of service as Reader/Associate Professor or Professor to increase their proficiency and usefulness to the University and higher education system. A teacher who has availed study leave would not be entitled to the sabbatical leave. For more details on Sabbatical Leave, please refer to the UGC guidelines 2010.

As per my knowledge, Sabbatical leave is not applicable to IT companies.

I saw the coverage for faculty members on Google. Thanks for your opinion. I would like to know if anyone can create a policy similar to that for IT employees if it does not already exist. I am not sure about this. As per my knowledge, policies are what we establish for employee welfare and smooth administration.

The concern is that recently one of my employees asked for a 2-month-long leave for personal reasons and inquired about our sabbatical leave policy.

Dear Ramesh Kumar ji, Thank you very much for providing the link to the Success Story of Infosys. I had read it previously, and your gesture has allowed me to revisit it. I respectfully disagree with your assertion that this link demonstrates the sabbatical leave as implemented by Infosys. The term 'sabbatical leave' used by Sudha ji is in a different context, relating to her domestic obligations.
