Designing a Man Basket for Five People: Can Anyone Share Their Expertise?

AKHIL KUNIYIL
Dear all, I have been assigned a task to create drawings for a man basket designed to handle five people. Can anyone assist me with this matter?

Thank you in advance.

Dear Akhil, Man baskets used to hoist personnel have stringent regulations on both design and construction. The standards state:

1. A bridle sling used to support the basket must have a master link or shackle to evenly distribute the weight.

2. The bridle sling and any other rigging attachments used for man basket hoisting shall not be used for any other purpose.

3. Before personnel use a basket, trial lifts with the anticipated weight must be made to any location(s) where the basket may be positioned. Trial lifts shall be performed every time the crane is repositioned.

4. The total weight of the loaded platform and related rigging shall not exceed 50% of the rated capacity for the radius and configuration of the crane.

5. The number of employees occupying the personnel platform shall not exceed the number required for the work being performed.

6. If the hoist line is non-rotating wire rope, the safety factor must be 10:1.

7. The crane must have a flip-over, positive-type hook latch.

8. Some regulations require a safety line attached to the basket and to the load line above the headache ball.

Please find the design attached. Make sure that only a qualified engineer designs the man basket. If you are not a mechanical engineer, please do not take a chance with it!
