Is It True That HR Might Be Taking Money for Job Placements? Seeking Clarity on a Shocking Experience

Dear sir, I am Rajesh. I completed my B.Tech with first class honors at a government college. One company selected me through campus recruitment; they sent an email to our college stating, "The list of the below candidates are selected in our company" only. However, after that, the HR was not responding to us. The HR recruited another person who was not on the selection list but who is a boy from my college.

I asked that boy how he got into that company without attending the campus interview. He said, "I gave one month's salary to the HR." At first, I did not believe that, but I called a consultancy to inquire if there were any vacancies. They said, "Yes, there is a vacancy in an MNC, but you must pay Rs. 35,000 to us." I asked why I should pay that much, stating that I would pay only one month's salary. He then told me something that truly shocked me.

"From the Rs. 35,000, I will give Rs. 30,000 to the HR and Rs. 5,000 for consultancy charges."

I want to know if the above is true. Is the HR asking for money to select employees, or will the consultancy damage the HR's name?

There are bad apples everywhere. At the same time, this could also be a ploy by the consultancy to justify their charges. It's better to stay away from such consultancies and depend on your hard work and skills.

Regarding Campus Selection

Ask your Placement Officer to pursue the matter with the company. However, until you have a firm offer in hand, you should keep trying for suitable positions.

My friend and I attended an interview; we were shortlisted after two rounds and proceeded to the HR interview. They asked us to pay 45,000 for them to select us for this company. They suggested an initial payment of 15,000 at the start of our careers, with the remaining 30,000 deducted from our salaries over 6 months. However, they only offered us a salary of 12,000.

I believe such incidents occur mostly in core companies, as I am not familiar with the practices in IT companies. I have been focusing on core sectors and facing these challenges. I search for jobs daily on various company websites but have not come across any fresher vacancies. I am unsure how consultancies manage to provide jobs for freshers.

I am questioning whether it was my fault to choose engineering or if it is the fault of HR for asking for money. If given the opportunity, only then can you judge whether I am a good or bad engineer. If people demand money, it makes me doubt myself.

I am simply sharing my experiences and feelings from the last 3 months.

Eligibility for Placement and HR Practices

1) Are you still eligible for placement via your institute, or have they removed you from the list since you have already received an offer?

2) Was this offer to pay openly made by the HR? How big is that company in terms of the nature of business, turnover, number of employees, etc.? You need not give the company name.

3) Many freshers face the same dilemma as you: no experience, no job, but you need a job to gain experience!

4) Some companies do ask for bonds, etc., from freshers since the tendency of freshers to leave just after a few months of the training period is high... a fact. However, at least I am not aware of any company HR department openly asking for bribes from candidates to offer them a job.

5) Some consultancies may have relationships with HR personnel for fresher's jobs. But I think these would be for low-level companies and would not be openly discussed since it would put everyone at risk. That is then your call - try to get references from successful candidates and proceed accordingly. Although personally, I would not focus on such companies, I do realize that the burdens of being jobless are indeed heavy.

6) Lack of jobs has nothing to do with your qualifications; it exists in all functions, and sometimes even for middle/senior levels. So, don't get disheartened by that.

Maybe senior HR people can share their viewpoints...

Sorry for replying late. I am not eligible because I am a 2014 pass-out student, and my college rule states, "If one person is selected by a company, he/she is not eligible to attend another company," so I cannot attend other companies after being placed by that company.

Actually, it is neither a small company nor a big company. It is a cable manufacturing company that produces all types of electrical and communication cables. This company is currently working on government projects and projects for well-known big companies. The website shows that the yearly turnover is between 50 to 100 crores.

Sir, every experienced person was a fresher at some point. I am well aware that graduates or freshers usually enter companies through campus placements only. Unfortunately, my company has not sent me a call letter, so I have decided to approach a consultant.

I believe consultants act as bridges between freshers and HR. However, consultants often charge a higher amount of money using HR's name.

I have seen some consultancies that provide lists of companies and vacancies but ask for 32,000 rupees while the salary offered is only 8,000 rupees. This is approximately 4 to 5 months' worth of salary.

The company recruited by our college offered me 1.5 LPA during the training period, and after training, they offered 2.0 LPA.

I am very sad about my situation...
