Feeling Stuck in Recruitment Consulting: Should I Transition to a Corporate HR Role?

I'm a BCA graduate currently pursuing an MBA (HR and IS) through correspondence. I was not very interested in pursuing a technical career and instead wanted to work in HR (I had no idea about it until I started working and realized the complexity of the field). I have joined a recruitment company and am currently working as a consultant, responsible for screening and shortlisting candidates based on the client's requirements.

I am now feeling confused about my career path and future prospects. A friend mentioned that working in consultancies might not offer a promising future and suggested transitioning to a corporate role. I am committed to this company for a year, and it has only been a month since I started. I am unsure about my options as a recruitment consultant and concerned about the potential for career growth and development.

I would greatly appreciate your guidance and valuable advice as I am feeling very confused and somewhat depressed about this situation.

There is nothing as such. If you work in consultancy, you will not get exposure. If you are really interested in the same profile, get complete process knowledge, acquire the required skills, and understand the tricks. This will give you more exposure in the future, rather than looking for exposure at the current stage. Don't get demotivated or depressed; good opportunities will come once you become an expert in that.

As Mr. Sourav said, you should have knowledge of the function or an interest in learning. Many people working in corporations started their careers in consultancy. However, it depends on your interest in the subject. If you like recruitment, you can gain real-time knowledge and exposure in consultancies rather than corporations. If you are interested in other HR functions, until you get an opportunity, you can continue with your recruitment job. Adding a recruitment function to your resume provides an advantage for your future. Your profile will be shortlisted for HR generalist positions as well, where others may not be.

Therefore, I suggest that you continue with your recruitment job until you receive your salary and are satisfied with the job. Simultaneously, search for jobs in corporations. Once you get an opportunity, make the switch.

It is not a bad thing to do a job in consultancy. It will build more confidence and relations with reputed companies, which will definitely be helpful to your career.
