Navigating Career Choices: Should I Join Wipro BPO or Pursue HR Opportunities?

Hello to everyone,

I am pursuing an MBA with a focus on HR and Marketing (currently in the 3rd semester). I have been selected for a position as an Associate at Wipro BPO. I am seeking guidance from all respected individuals.

1. Can you guide me about the package? They have offered me 1.5 yearly. They have appreciated my communication skills, so I want to know if I will be able to excel in that sector.

2. What should I do – accept this position or should I look for opportunities in the functional area of HR?

Any suggestions or experiences shared are welcomed.

Hi Chandan,

You can join it if your college allows you and does not impact your studies. In the 4th semester, people usually do so but not in the 3rd semester. Also, check the work profile with them. If it is something related to HR or even if you are getting some HR industry exposure, then it will certainly help you in getting a job once you pass out.

It is just the beginning of your career, so you should not be worried about the pay package. Rather, you can ask them about your roles and responsibilities so that you can get maximum exposure in the HR field. You are lucky that you are getting a break in a good company. So just grab it!

You can join if it is related to technical call handling, as you would be improving your communication (especially e-mail etiquette), accent, presentability, and most importantly handling customers with patience because in HR, you would require all these skills. Later, you can switch to the HR field. One of my team members has the same background. After completing her MBA, she had worked for Mphasis, Philips for around one and a half years, and then she had switched to HR. Now she is working as a senior executive, and she is the best performer on my team. The choice is yours! Anyways, you have a lot of time to think about this. You can keep it as an option and can try for some other jobs as well.

For that, just 12 is enough. Even I received an offer from Wipro for this kind of job. I thought it was in HR, but they told me that it's an HR process and I'm just an associate, nothing else. They will treat you as an employee and not as HR.

The choice is yours. By the way, take my advice: use your Wipro offer letter and try to get a decent job in HR. :)

Yes, they appreciate only for communication skills. Even a 12-pass waiter in a 5-star hotel has better communication skills than I have. It depends on what you have to utilize: your analytical, numerical, managerial, administrative, strategic planning skills, or just communication skills.

From the looks of it, it seems like a calling job. On the funnier side, we pay more than them. My organization pays Rs 2,40,00 for freshers in Chennai.

Jokes apart, I guess you should focus on some good HR/Marketing job. You are doing your MBA, right? Why would you want to take up a calling job? Your initial job will be the foundation for your future career growth. Would you want to be facing questions like, "Why did you do a calling job when you were doing an MBA (HR)? Did you not get HR jobs? Were you not able to focus on your studies enough?"

Finish your MBA and look at hardcore HR jobs.

I read your post, and I personally feel it would be better for you to finish your MBA and then search for a job in HR. It feels good to be complimented, but one should never get carried away. If you are specializing in HR and Marketing, please think about why you chose to do so in the first place and what your career path should be.

Money always looks good, and so does the brand image of a company. However, the most important thing one should seek is a good job profile that is fulfilling and where you see yourself growing. The rest is for you to decide.

Yes, I agree with Abhilasha. It seems good to get compliments and offers at this age, but you have to look at it from a long-term perspective. There is a good scope for you once you complete your MBA with flying colors. If you are keen on pursuing HR as your career and it is your area of interest, then go ahead like a horse with blinders on. Be focused on your interests, come what may. You may not regret it later. I have noted the contents which all have written, and I feel that you should concentrate on your studies and take up a job in the HR field itself. One should not think in monetary aspects until one has gained enough practical experience. All the best.

You would need to decide based on the following:

1. Is it a day shift or night shift?
2. What are the work hours (8 or 9 hours a day plus commute time)?
3. Will you get enough time to study (your grades might suffer)?
4. Communication skills (probably will improve).
5. Exposure to a professional work environment.
6. Exposure to the other side of HR (operations—it is valuable experience).

In other words, if you are confident your health and grades will not suffer and you treat this job as a stopgap arrangement to improve your communication skills, exposure to a professional work environment, and, importantly, experience the way HR deals with you, it can be a worthwhile experience.

You should focus on studies right now. If this is what you were looking for, you could have done that straight after XII. Think about it. Don't just go after a job or a brand.

Please don't join. It is a demanding job. Once you join, it will become quite difficult to shift into HR.

I don't think you should go for this calling job (Agent level). :evil: You are doing your MBA course. :idea: Complete it first. There are many jobs in HR/marketing for fresher. Please don't suppress your qualification. You are not made for calling position. You are a future manager. This calling job will not help you out. There are many other ways to improve your self, communication skills, personality and etc.
Your vision should be clear. After doing MBA you can get better job. Don't underestimate yourself. :)
Complete your study and go for better opportunity. :)

Hi, Please find the reasons to take the offer. Since you are still studying, you really need to have financial support. Working at Wipro adds weightage to your profile. Of course, as you said, it's tele-calling, not HR. You can phrase it this way: I have taken up the job for financial support, to learn about work-life, and to gain work experience at Wipro.

Reasons not to take the offer: It may affect your studies if you don't balance studies and the job. It is not related to HR. Now, take some time to think and decide, and please let me know your decision.

You said it's Apr 08, where you'll be in the early 4th semester. Guess you might be focused on your final project if not wrong. I feel it's not preferable to accept this offer as it is completely a telecaller (BPO) job which doesn't suit a HR aspirant. Better look for some good options to pick up. Always look for the exposure and the roles/responsibilities in the early career rather than the company brand.
