Seeking Advice on Specialized HR Courses for Career Growth After an MBA and a Career Break

aninditasom
I completed my MBA in HR through a distance learning course in 2007. I experienced a career gap due to my young daughter, but now I have joined a private limited company as an HR officer. However, I am interested in pursuing a specialized course in HR administration, training, or another related field. I am seeking an opportunity that will allow me to work independently or as a freelancer in the future. I am looking to develop my skills in a field that offers good opportunities in the market. If anyone can provide me with guidance, I would be very thankful.

Identifying Your HR Specialty

I think the first question to be considered is: is there a specific specialty within HR that most suits your interests and skills? For example: compensation and benefits, mobility services, assessment centers, etc.

I would advise first determining what areas are most interesting to you and looking at where you are to determine what gaps in services are apparent in your local or intended workplace. Once you have a handle on which areas you will gravitate toward, start reading everything you can get your hands on, especially on issues that are hot in your environment.

If you are seeking international opportunities, work on the language of your intended market, for example, a command of Arabic in the GCC.

Keep track of your accomplishments and results. All too often, I see CVs that focus on tasks and job responsibilities but make no mention of the outcomes of the work. What you were responsible for is less important than what you did - achieved - regarding those duties.

Considering Freelancing or Consulting

If you are considering freelancing and/or consulting: Develop your communication skills, flexibility, and your ability to be self-motivated. Working for yourself is no easy task.
