Stuck with a 3-Month Notice Period: Can My Company Release Me Early for a New Job?

Hi, I got a new job offer with a good salary. I am changing my job because I need to enroll my child in a school due to my poor financial condition. However, my current company's notice period is 3 months, but I received an offer to join within 2 months, and the new company is not accepting a 3-month notice period. Please advise whether my current company will consider this reason and release me earlier.

Thank you very much for your reply. Above is my true reason which I am going to tell my management, but my coworkers were advising not to disclose that reason. Instead, they suggested finding a stronger reason. Please advise whether it is appropriate to inform management about my need for early relieving.

You just need to speak to your immediate supervisor, boss, or senior in this regard. You can also request your HR to relieve you early by deducting the short notice period amount from your total dues. This is the only option you have at hand. You have to convince them to relieve you but must not share that you are going to join another employer that requires your early exit with them.

Be frank and tell the company that you need early relieving. Speak with your Dept Head and speak the truth. The world is small, and false statements will hurt in the long run. You never know, but your current boss may join your new company as your boss's boss and will never trust you. So be truthful, and things will fall into place. Be truthful and clear in your conversation.

I would view the suggestion given by the members a bit differently—rather than stressing about 'speaking the Truth,' I would suggest you focus on 'NOT speaking a lie.' There are quite often situations like you are facing right now where you get damned when you speak the truth, but that surely doesn't mean you have to lie. Take Anil Arora's suggestion—reveal only about your kid's school issue for resigning (which is also the truth), but DON'T reveal about your new job. You aren't lying nor are you revealing a truth that would, most likely, hurt your interest.

Unfortunately, they came to know that I am going for another job. However, I have managed to explain that due to my financial situation and the need to support my kids' education, I am pursuing a new career that will help me provide for my son. The decision still needs approval from the operations head, and while my first-line manager and second-level manager have agreed with my reasoning, the issue lies in the fact that the company has never granted early release to an employee before.

If they reject my request for early relieving within 30 days, it puts my children's education at risk, and I am truly worried about the potential consequences. I hope to receive clarification on this matter soon.

Just relax and join the new company as per their joining date. Inform your new employer that they might need to forgo the relieving letter for some time. A two-month notice is fair enough for a proper handover.
