At the time of my joining in June 2010, it was mentioned in my offer letter that I would receive a certain amount of Rs. X thousand as a retention bonus after completing 4 years with the company. Last year, starting from July 1, 2013, I was on educational leave, which was completely without pay (LOP). I have recently returned to work this month. The HR department is now stating that I am not eligible to receive the retention bonus this year. However, I believe that even though I did not actively work for the company last year, I was still an employee on LOP. Therefore, I believe I should still be entitled to the retention amount.
