Facing Job Uncertainty After Expressing Interest in HR Role – How Can I Navigate This?

Hi all, I need your help. I have experience as an HR professional but recently joined a company in the HR industry in the sales team. After two weeks, I was informed by the CEO of the company that they are in need of an HR professional, but he was not aware of my joining in the same company. I replied to him on LinkedIn expressing my eagerness to transition into the HR role as I am not satisfied with my current position in sales. I also informed my supervisor and manager about this situation.

Now, they have stopped assigning me work and have taken back all my responsibilities, indicating that I should leave because they believe I am not interested in the sales role and am more inclined towards HR.

Please advise me on how I can retain my job until I secure another position.

Once you have shown that you are not keen on your existing role, no one will give you another opportunity to continue or rejoin the organization. So, instead of hoping for a miracle, start searching for a new job in the market and, if possible, join the HR field where you are interested.

Lessons Learned from Job Experience

• Sales is not for everyone.

• Apply for a job you are genuinely interested in and then give it your best.

• Think carefully before you commit anything in writing.

• Social sites make it easy to connect. That too has its pitfalls!

As of now, your only long chance to save this job seems to be to write to the CEO and indicate along the lines of:

"My earlier mail was not worded well. All I wanted to convey was to please consider me for the HR responsibilities in addition to the sales one, which I am keen on, and assure you of my best efforts."

It is a long shot, as already said. I am also curious—a good selection process would cover this well. With your past experience, how did you apply or were considered for a Sales role?

As per my concern, you should leave that job ASAP. If you plan to start your career in sales, then you should continue with sales itself. If you are interested in HR, then leave that job and try for HR only. It will take time, but it will be worth it. Once you gain sales experience, then you should pursue your career in sales as that experience will not work in the HR field.

Apart from this, think carefully and make a decision that is up to you.
