Torn Between HR and Marketing: How Do Career Growth Prospects Really Compare?

g.shivaraj1991
Good morning all, As I am pursuing my PGDM first year, I am now totally confused about what to specialize in, whether HR or Marketing. I know that specialization will shape one's career, and I have to choose what I will enjoy. I like HR the most, and some of our faculty experts have mentioned that, when comparing Marketing and HR, Marketing may offer better growth in terms of position, pay, and status. Is this true? I understand that initially, the pay for HR may be lower, but after 2-3 years, how does it compare to someone in Marketing with a similar amount of skills and experience?

Career Growth Prospects in Marketing and HR

I am also curious about the career growth prospects in Marketing and HR. If I choose Marketing, what types of jobs will be available, and how many years of fieldwork are typically required in the initial stages?

Thank you.

Choosing Your Specialization: Marketing vs. HR

It is better that you take Marketing as your major and HR as your minor. The combination of Marketing and HR is just perfect. Always prefer to opt for B2B (business-to-business) processes in a Marketing job.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Specialization

You have to consider a number of things while making a decision. Which college are you doing your PGDM from? How is the placement record for your college for HR and marketing?

Career Opportunities in Marketing vs. HR

If one chooses marketing, then, of course, many job opportunities open up, which is not the case for HR. Marketing also tends to pay more. However, it involves a lot of fieldwork and long, stressful working hours, at least initially. You have to remember that sales/marketing are revenue departments and hence will always command higher pay in a company.

Skills Required for HR

HR, on the other hand, requires individuals with excellent communication skills who are good with people and are effective administrators. Working in HR demands a lot of strength, resilience, and a genuine passion.
