Worried About Background Checks? How to Handle Missing Relieving Letters and Hidden Experience

radhakrishna1
Hi, I have a total of 4.2 years of experience. I worked for 5 months in the first company, A. Then, I got selected by company B. However, as they required immediate joining, I joined without a relieving letter from company A. Therefore, I did not serve the notice period at company A (which was a big mistake on my part). For the last 3.7 years, I have been working with company B.

Now, I have received an offer from company C, a big MNC. Due to not having a relieving letter from company A, I only mentioned company B as my first company and did not include my previous five months of experience. I informed company C that during those five months, I was undergoing training and job searching.

In the background check (BGC), will company C inquire with company B to verify whether I am a fresher or have experience in a higher position at company B? I understand that what I did was very wrong, and I sincerely apologize for it. Initially, I lacked knowledge and did not seek advice from anyone. Will company C eventually find out that I have hidden my previous experience?

I would appreciate your suggestions on this matter.

Don't be so scared! If you have not mentioned anything in your profile about your 5 months of experience, then the present company (where you are joining) will not check for the hidden details. The present company will verify with your previous company only related to the tenure you served there (e.g., name, designation, duration, exit formalities, violation of bond/contract, etc.). Apart from that, they won't inquire with your previous company about your overall experience details.

You can also consider approaching your first company and request a 5-month experience letter. If you have your appointment letter, you can refer to it as there may be a clause that states, "If you don't serve the notice period, then you may have to pay the notice period amount and get relieved immediately." If this option is available, you can try this to obtain the documents from your first company.
