Understanding Medical Reimbursement vs. Medical Allowance

In terms of salary components and income tax calculation, understanding the variance between Medical Reimbursement and Medical Allowance is crucial. Medical Reimbursement refers to the reimbursement of medical expenses incurred by an employee. This amount is usually reimbursed by the employer based on the bills submitted by the employee for medical treatment. It is a benefit provided to cover actual medical expenses.

On the other hand, Medical Allowance is a fixed amount provided by the employer to the employee as a part of the salary package. This allowance is provided irrespective of whether the employee incurs any medical expenses or not. Medical Allowance is generally taxable as part of the employee's income.

When it comes to income tax calculation, Medical Reimbursement is usually exempt up to a certain limit specified by the Income Tax Act. However, Medical Allowance is fully taxable as part of the employee's income.

Understanding these distinctions can help employees and employers make informed decisions regarding the salary structure and tax implications related to medical benefits.

Medical Allowance is a fully taxable salary component, whereas Medical Reimbursement is a perquisite that is exempt from tax, subject to a maximum of Rs. 15,000/- per financial year. Medical Reimbursement is an HR policy matter. However, the employee has to submit bills up to Rs. 15,000/- to avail of the tax exemption. Depending on the policy established by the HR department, it is acceptable. In other words, the company may implement a policy that requires the employee to submit the original bill of medicine. If a bill exceeds a value of Rs. 500/-, it should be accompanied by a doctor's prescription, etc. This policy framed by the company may likely be monitored by the Tax department.
